Planet of the Snails

In Planet of the Apes we saw a horrifying future where primates have become the dominant species of earth. But in the far, far reaches of the past it wasn't any form of mammal that rose to become the dominant species at all, but mollusks. Species such as oysters, snails and clams were the ones who went forth and multiplied.

This was way before the age of huge lizards (the dinosaurs,) during the the Permian period. The end of the Permian period was the time of a great mass extinction. This mass extinction is now believed to be the largest one in Earth's history, marked by global warming. This is global warming not in the sense that we are familiar with today, but one caused by natural forces such as massive volcanic activities.

The global warming resulted in less oxygenated water. Such conditions allowed mollusks to thrive while other species just died off. The mass extinction is believed to have wiped off 95% of all the species during that time.

A study of over four years by LiveScience gathered evidence from limestone research in China, Greece, Thailand, Nevada and Texas that supports the theory of the mass extinction and the rise of mollusks during that era.
